Quick answer
The short version
Seoul dance battle THE SAUCE 2027 is a salsa × freestyle 1v1 crossover. Total prizes are $13,000 with $7,000 for first place, and entry is open across styles including hip-hop, popping, locking, waacking, krump, salsa, and contemporary dance. Judges decide Friday qualifiers and Saturday rounds; Sunday's final combines 60% judges and 40% audience QR voting. You do not need a salsa background to enter with your own style.
“Can I dance street to salsa music?” Yes. That is this battle's rule.
When a battle notice lands in a crew chat, reactions usually split in two. Street dancers pass it over thinking, “It is a salsa competition; there is no place for us,” while salsa dancers hesitate: “What do I do when a freestyle beat comes on?”
The directions differ, but it is the same worry: being embarrassed in front of music outside their genre. THE SAUCE removes that worry by making it the competition's central rule.
What is at stake: $13,000 in total prizes, $7,000 for the winner
As of the official guidance dated July 26, 2026, THE SAUCE 2027 offers $13,000 in total prizes and $7,000 for the winner (about KRW 10 million).
Entry uses advance registration on a first-come, first-served basis, and the main event consists of one-on-one battles. If an opponent is absent or does not answer the call, you advance by default.
| Day | Round | Key details |
|---|---|---|
| Friday | Registration & qualifiers | Multiple battle stages run simultaneously to select main-draw entrants · if title contenders meet, the losing dancer may join through a wildcard |
| Saturday | Main tournament | 1-on-1 battles · TOP 16 selected for Sunday's stage (paired advancement and wildcards apply) |
| Sunday | Main final | A single main stage from TOP 16 through the final · paid audience entry · Judge Showcase and awards ceremony |
Why audience voting exists only in the final
Judging differs by round. Friday qualifiers and Saturday's main event are decided by judges. The 60% judges plus 40% audience-vote system applies only to Sunday's final.
The reason is simple: Sunday is when every competition comes together, and when paid audience members enter to see that stage. It is not a round where you persuade only judges; you must move first-time audience members too.
How to prepare by genre
- 01
Street dancers (hip-hop, popping, locking, waacking, krump)
You do not need to learn a new genre; you need to practice laying your existing skills over salsa rhythm. Listen often to salsa percussion and musical breaks, and unfamiliar music becomes a new beat.
- 02
Salsa and Latin dancers
The decisive moment is taking control of music alone, without a partner. Experiment with how your salsa moves sound over freestyle beats. Your familiar ability to interpret rhythm is a weapon in any music.
- 03
Contemporary, girls' hip-hop, and all-genre dancers
There are no genre rules to follow in this battle. Interpreting music in your own language is itself a weapon. On a mixed-genre floor, a distinct bodily language stands out more clearly.

Yes. THE SAUCE is a crossover battle with no genre restriction, and about half its battle music consists of freestyle beats such as hip-hop, R&B, and house. Salsa sections are not a test of a new genre; they are sections to interpret in your own style.
Does audience voting apply to every round?
No. The 60% judges plus 40% audience-vote system applies only to Sunday's final, when paid audiences enter. Friday qualifiers and Saturday's main event are decided by judges.
Can I listen to the battle music in advance?
Under the current official guidance, battle music will be released gradually from August. It will be available through official channels as it is released and combines salsa and freestyle beats.
